Operation Make Our House a Home

Happy Thursday!

I have been taking every opportunity to try to furnish and decorate our home. It has been a slow and somewhat painful process.

Also, I'm picky…especially this go round.

I still don't have any of the rooms finished but I'm going to share little peeks of what we've done so far.

The theatre room is pretty much done. We are debating on whether or not we want to hang anything on the walls. I think we should at least hang something for people to see at the top of the stairs because my craft room is to the right and the theatre room is to the left.

Did I post about the dining chairs? When I got the second set of chairs, I was a little disappointed in the color. It was not represented well at all online (and yes I know the colors on your screen vary but these were WAY off). But…..I ended up deciding to keep them once we put the room back together after our wood floors were re-done (don't even get me started on this topic). The dining room is almost done except for some things on the walls and décor.

I got the legs to the other navy chair that we ordered from Joss & Main for the formal living area. We repaired, touched up and used a table that was in our house pre-tornado to go in between the two chairs. Now I  need a lamp, some curtains, a rug and décor to finish off this space.

In the family room, we hung the curtains that I posted about yesterday.  Don't worry mom, I WILL steam them and get the wrinkles out. We moved the dresser we re-painted into the family room as well. I also posted about that yesterday if you want to see the before. The family room is also almost done. We just need to hang some pictures and add some décor.

That's about all we've accomplished so far. We have a huge to-do list for things we need to build, paint, etc. I need to pick up the pace on decorating too because TnT's party is in TWO WEEKS and I want to have a lot more done before then!

Sorry for the horrible iPhone pics. I promise I'll get my big girl camera out for the big reveals. :)

Wednesday Randoms

This week has been a good one so far. I was able to get lots of laundry done, I unpacked a couple of boxes and worked on designs for the shop.

I've been wanting to do a re-launch of my shop and gosh darn it, this time I'm going to get it done! Ever since the girls were born, I've struggled with finding the time to work. Also, here recently, for some reason, have been requiring more sleep than usual so staying up late has not been much of an option. Waking up earlier than the girls hasn't worked either because when I do, they wake up shortly after. Even when I'm being as quiet as a mouse. Anyway, I think I figured out a good work schedule that allows me to balance work and family. Let's hope my little tornados cooperate so I can stick to it.

We JMac did a little DIY this weekend. We bought this dresser for the family room. I didn't care too much for the stained top and drawers so we decided to go all white and replace the handles. I really like how it turned out!

Speaking of the family room…I also got the curtains I ordered for our big windows. I couldn't find any long enough locally so I had to order them online. I ended up ordering these in Aqua from Bed Bath & Beyond. I loved the grommet detail on them!

I have less than 3 weeks to get TnT's party planned. Yikes! The theme is going to be UP. I figured it would be easy…just decorate with a ton of balloons. :) I got the invitations designed, printed and addressed this weekend. Here's the sneak peek of the invite that I posted on Instagram this weekend.

How has your week been so far?

Silly Saturday

Two years old isn't always a bad thing. Along with all the dreaded typical two year old behavior, there has also been a lot of silliness over here. Today I thought I'd share a little bit of that silliness with you.

I'm sure you can tell by these pictures who's the leader of this comedic duo.

She comes by it honestly….she's her father's daughter. She gets her talent of impersonations from him too. Can you guess who she is here? ARRRRR!

photo 3 (43)

Half the time we have no idea where she get's these ideas. She's so random. Haha!

And then there's this one. She's turned into my quiet child…except when she's talking on her foot phone.

"Hewoah? He-woah?"

Seriously. I have no idea.

I'm pretty sure this represents both of their thoughts on potty training. Don't even get me started on that subject. Ooof!

Unintentional Storm Chasing

We had quite a weekend. It was so busy that I needed yesterday to rest up!

photo (60)

Saturday we made the 2 hour trip to my grandpa's, who lives at the lake, to celebrate his 83rd birthday. All of his children, grand-children and great-grandchildren were there. Sadly, I didn't get any pictures (except the one I took in the car on the way down) because I was too busy catching up with everyone.

We had a blast…especially TnT. The girls got to meet some cousins they had never met before. There was lots of eating, golf cart riding, lake viewing, horseshoe playing, running through the sprinkler, talking and relaxing. It's always surprises me how relaxed I feel when we do down there. It's unlike any vacation….except for maybe a kid-less beach vacation with fruity drinks.

Around dinner time, we gathered our clan and decided to eat dinner on our way out of town. We rode with my parents. On our way to the restaurant, I noticed some storm clouds so I opened my weather app to see what was going on. There was a severe storm headed our way but I figured we would be ok once we finished dinner and headed north toward home. Boy was I wrong.

We finished dinner, loaded everyone up in my parents suburban and headed home. At this point I'm still thinking we're ok and would be able to stay ahead of the storm. I forgot to mention that my sister and her family were in their car ahead of us. Well, that storm that appeared to be moving due east started moving north east an somehow we were heading right toward it.

I asked the driver (AKA my dad) and the passenger (AKA JMac) if maybe we should stop somewhere until it passes but they didn't seem worried so we kept going. My mom told me to breathe and that it would be ok (I wasn't convinced). Then she announced that she needed a pit stop. My sister and her family kept going.

It started to rain while we were waiting on my mom but it wasn't bad. We got back on the highway and headed home. It wasn't long before it was raining so hard that we couldn't see anything outside the car. We texted my sister to see how it was up ahead. No response.

I finally decided to call her and when when she answered I knew it was bad. Just seconds after answering the phone, I could hear large objects hitting their car which I assumed to be hail. Then everyone started screaming. I had no idea what was going on. Meanwhile, my dad kept driving and kept begging him to pull over as the winds and rain continued to get worse. My dad finally decided to pull off the highway and under an overpass when it began to hail where we were. I was still on the phone with my sister who by now was praying so hard and so loud that I started to get really scared.

Shortly after everything calmed down, I got a "Shear Storm Warning" on my phone a little too late on that.

Despite being under and overpass, my sister and BIL were being hit with large flying debris from the 75mph+ straight line winds. Trees and rocks and pieces of sheet metal were flying at them and did quite a bit of damage to their car. The car next to them had their windows busted out and the people inside were covered in mud and debris but thankfully they were ok…just in a little bit of shock.

Somehow we had managed to come within a mile of them after our pit stop before the bad part of the storm hit yet we managed to escape the flying debris and I think the strongest winds.

TnT slept through the entire thing.

The lesson here? NEVER EVER DRIVE INTO A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM! (cough, cough dad & JMac).

Wednesday Randoms

Hello Wednesday. You snuck up on me this week.

It's been really humid in our house since we moved in so we've turned down the thermostat to try to bring the humidity down. Because of this, it's a little chilly in here….especially in the laundry room. Since my "office" is in the laundry room, I spend most of my days in here either working or doing laundry (blech!) and I freeze! I think this room is the coldest one in the whole house! Right now it's in the 90's outside and here I am wearning fleece lounge pants and a hoodie. Obviously, I'm not doing laundry. Maybe I should fold that pile of towels on the folding counter to warm up…..or not. Ha!

Our dining room got moved to the family room last night. Our wood floors are supposedly getting touched up this afternoon. Actually, I'm not letting them leave until they fix the floors. I'm tired of being stuck here waiting for contractors to show up. This is week SIX of people coming in and out of my house. I'm so over it. I'm ready to furnish and decorate our home.

Last night we had tacos for dinner. About an hour after dinner Tillie demanded bacon….and then pancakes. She ended up having 2 helpings. Toddlers are weird.

Does anyone else have trouble functioning after a night of interrupted sleep? I'm usually ok if I'm up late and get little sleep but when I wake up many times in the night I'm pretty much worthless the next day. I'm not sure if it was related to the pancakes and bacon but Tillie kept me up all night moaning and groaning. In fact, both girls have been crying out, moaning & groaning throughout the night for the past couple of weeks. I'm hoping this is a phase that will pass sooner rather than later. Until then, there will be lots of coffee consumption.

We got a zoo pass for the first time this year. With a splash pad and several playgrounds at our zoo, I see us taking a lot of trips there this summer. We went on Monday and stayed about 3 hours which was plenty because it got HOT.

Teaching Toddlers: Alphabet Seek & Find

Alphabet Fun_Cover-1

Not all learning has to be in a sit down structured setting. You can often teach your toddlers the skills they need for pre-school with items or toys found around your house.

Ever since my girls were infants I would sing them alphabet song. I thought it might help them learn the alphabet but after almost 3 years, it hasn't quite clicked yet so I decided to get a little creative and make it more fun and interactive.

This activity is the most requested in our house right now and we often will play it 2-3 times a day.

  • Letter Shapes (I use the magnet letters you can get at the dollar store)
  • Alphabet Flash Cards

  • To set up this activity, make sure you have each letter represented with your flash cards and your letters then spread the letters out throughout the room.
  • Hold up a flash card and ask your toddler to find the letter on the card.
  • Say the letter. Make the sound the letter makes, and name an item that starts with that letter.
  • The toddler seeks out and finds the letter. (Once they find the letter, my girls like to hold the letter up to the card to see if it matches).
  • Repeat the steps until your toddler has found all the letters.

I have not tried it yet, but this activity would work for numbers and shapes as well!

Happy Learning!
