Rebuild Update: Week 19-Stand Still

New Mills Rebuild Logo

It was a holiday week so there wasn't much work done at the house this week. A little bit of brick and stone work is all.

The brick layers and stone masons have been using water from the house to use for mixing their mortar. Before the ice storm, they failed to turn the water off at the main connection so it froze in our pipes and caused some of the caps on the pluming inside to bust therefore causing flooding in the house. Several sheets of dry wall were ruined.

It was discovered this week that some of the brick layer's equipment had been stolen. They had also attempted to steal some of the larger equipment that was chained down but thankfully, had no success in their attempts. This has been an issue in our area and all throughout the city of Moore since the tornado. I can't believe thieves are taking things from properties that have already lost so much. I don't remember if I posted about this but just days after the tornado, my grandparents, who live next door to us, had everything stolen out of their barn and then the next day, thieves came back and hauled off my grandpa's non-running truck. It was bad enough they lost their house and most of their belongings and then to have anything they had left stolen just broke my heart.

What a lovely Christmas at our house, huh? I sure hope 2014 brings better days and lots more progress.

Our Christmas Card

I failed big time on our Christmas cards this year. So bad, in fact that I didn't have pictures made nor did I order them until last weekend which means that they won't go out until after Christmas.

Some of you will be getting a physical copy so if you want to be surprised when you do get it, you might want to click away from this post NOW! :)

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!

My Rockin' Holiday Playlist

Year after year, I have had the same favorite Christmas Albums. I have been known to blast these albums while dancing and working in my kitchen making all kinds of Christmas goodies.

Christmas Playlist

These are my favorites in no particular order:

It also wouldn't be Christmas for me if I don't hear the following two songs:

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas by Gayla Peevey (Is this a nationwide known song? I don't get out of my Oklahoma bubble very often so I was just curious.)

The BC Clark Jingle (unless you are from Oklahoma, know someone from Oklahoma or have visited Oklahoma during the holidays, you most likely will not know this jingle. It has been around for yearrrrrrrs and is a jingle for a jewelry store. However, I just discovered while writing this post, you can download it from iTunes!)

Rebuild Update: Week 18-Brick & Stone

New Mills Rebuild Logo

Ladies and gentlemen, we are back in business! The busy worker bees were back at the house this week. Here is a rundown of what has happened this week.

  • The framing around the windows was finished.
  • The opening to the pantry was fixed. Good bye pocket door! We decided to just do a cased in opening. I actually think I'll like not having a door much better.
  • Plumbing failed inspection.
  • The sweet girls in my bible study group and I wrote bible verses on the studs all throughout the house.

Week 18-Bible Verses

  • The brick and stone was started! I think it's going to take at least a week to get that done. I had no idea laying stone was so tedious.
I LOVE our stone choice. I had posted before how hard it was choosing the brick and stone and worrying if they would go together. I'm so relieved that the brick and stone compliment each other well.

Week-18-Brick-on-East-sideWeek 18-Stone on MasterWeek 18-Stone Corner

  • Plumbing passed inspection!
  • They started insulating. They hope to be done Monday so they can start the drywall on Tuesday. I'm a little shocked they're actually working on Christmas Eve. However, they have the flooring scheduled to be laid on January 2nd so before that can happen the drywall has to be done.
  • We had an ice storm that hit last that I hope doesn't delay anything.

I can't believe it's Christmas already. It doesn't feel like Christmas. As of right now, we really don't have any plans with my father-in-law and we just decided what to for Christmas with my family. I'm in such a weird place right now. Not only are we displaced physically, but I constantly feel displaced mentally and emotionally as well. I'm just ready to feel "normal again".

And I'm ready to not feel like weather is controlling our lives!

Coherent Thoughts from a Chaotic Mind

I feel like I hit the ground running yesterday and haven't stopped. We have things planned pretty much every day this week.

JMac (That's hubby's new nick name here on the blog. He's not a fan of it just yet ;P) is off for 15 days starting tomorrow. I'm not sure if I should be excited about this or not. I mean, 15 24 hour days where I have an extra set of hands to help with the girls is awesome but 15 24 hour days with all four of us in this little apartment? I think I'll be planning extra Mom's night out dates.

For the first time since the tornado I started back with my couponing. We have been spending A LOT on groceries AND eating out and it's time to reign in our spending in this area. I also need to reign in my spending on clothes for the girls but….baby steps. Anyway, I made my very first post tornado coupon trip and I think I did pretty well.
Post Tornado Coupon Trip Post Tornado Coupon Haul
I got 3 packages of rice (All FREE!), 2 4lb bags of sugar ($0.39/ea.!), 2 boxes of Ritz Crackers ($1.00/ea.) and some deodorant for JMac (spent more than I wanted but he was out).

I tried making Christmas Crack (basically toffee for those who don't know what that is). I failed. It turned out more like caramel & chocolate covered crackers. Apparently I need a candy thermometer.
Christmas Crack

I discovered a way to get me an extra few minutes in Target when the littles are with me.
Tens Popcorn
Bless you Target for selling popcorn!

I think it's safe to say I'm totally addicted to monogramming the girls' names on ALL THE THINGS. I have gotten most of the girls stuff from N&S Adorables. If you're a twin momma, she will give you a 10% discount. You're welcome. :)
Tillie in N&S

I have been told there will be much progress at the house this week. Hopefully, I'll have lots of pictures in the next Mills Rebuild update!

Rebuild Update: Week 17-The Next Steps

New Mills Rebuild Logo

Yet another week has gone by with very little progress. I'm starting to feel like a broken record. Do I sound like a broken record?

We went out to check on the house last night. There were signs of progress!

They did get the correct windows installed. Woohoo! Yes, I may have done a happy dance…actually it was to try to stay warm but WINDOWSSSSSS! They had framed in the ugly windows so that had to be taken out to install the new, correct windows. They will reframe these windows.

Week 17-1

Drywall had been delivered. You should have seen the smile on my face when I saw the drywall.

Week 17-2

There was also mortar for the brick in the garage! Brick was delivered a looooong time ago. Brick and stone! Brick and stone! I can't wait to see how it all looks ON the house!

Week 17-3

The one thing we were waiting on this week was for the plumbing to pass inspection but as of last night, there were no signs that a final inspection had occurred. Come on city inspectors, it was just a little snow and ice. Get out there and get 'er done!

So assuming plumbing passes inspection VERY SOON, we should at minimum get insulation next week. I will be thrilled….THRILLED if they start putting up the sheetrock next week.

So are you guys as anxious as I am to see walls and brick and stone?!?

TnT at the Movies

I have been wanting to take the girls to the movies since they were about a year old. Some advised against it and some said go for it. I decided to wait until the right movie came out.

I started hearing about Frozen before it came out in theatres and thought it might be a good one to take the girls to see but was still a little hesitant. Then everyone started talking about how well their toddlers did so I started thinking maybe this was the one.

It wasn't until one day about a week ago when I was entering reward codes from my Kellogg boxes and somehow got a free ticket to the movie that I decided we were going!

When I was planning out our week, I decided to go on Wednesday (yesterday) and drag my mom along with us so we could bookend the girls in case they decided to get up and roam.

Frozen Movie

The girls LOVE popcorn so instead of stocking up on snacks, I decided to buy them some popcorn at the theatre. I had envisioned them sitting in their seats staring at the screen in awe of the movie while munching on their buckets of popcorn.

It didn't go quite like that.

We got to the theatre late so they had just dimmed the lights when we walked into the theatre.  We decided to sit in the back row in case we had to make a quick exit and as we were trying to get the girls settled, the previews came on and Tillie instantly starts crying because the loudness scared her. Then Tensley started whimpering. My mom was trying to get herself situated so she could hold Tensley and at some point, Tensley's popcorn got tossed about and ended up on the floor. While I was trying to get settled with my arms full of coats, blankies, the diaper bag and our snacks from the concession stand, Tillie's popcorn tipped over in the tray I was carrying and also ended up on the floor. Thankfully, there were only 2 other families in the theatre.

This WAS NOT going as I had envisioned it would. I tend to see the best case scenario when planning events and outings…maybe I should start envisioning the above scenario.

Anyway, we finally got settled. My mom and I each had a toddler who had been comforted by pacis and blankies and then the movie started.

I think Tillie had her face covered or partially covered by her blankie through the majority of the movie but she sat still through the whole thing. Tensley decided she didn't want to sit so she stood up through the movie watching it through the space between the seats in front of us. They both seemed to enjoy the movie though.

So now I have my first movie theatre experience with toddlers under my belt. I think….hope the next time will go a little smoother. I'll definitely make sure we get their long before the lights are dimmed.

Rebuild Update: Week 16-Snow Delay

New Mills Rebuild Logo

We had another week of slow progress. I'm ready for the work to pick back up but the weather is not being nice to us.

Most of the plumbing was done last week but then this happened.

Week 16-Snowy House

We also had some water freeze in a drain pipe in the media room. We don't have the water turned on yet so we're not sure where it came from. We're just hoping it didn't cause any major damage that we can't see. The plumber is supposed to check on it when the ice melts. Our temps are supposed to be above freezing starting tomorrow so hopefully that will happen soon!

Hubby finished his installation of all the AV cables and added some plywood in the attic for walkways this past weekend

The next items on the list are exterior painting and insulation.

Now we just wait for the weather to improve so the work can start back up. I don't like the fact that we are pretty much standing still at this point. Darn you, Winter!

Snow Day Chaos Day 2

Well we barely survived day two (yesterday….Friday) of being stuck inside.

The girls basically destroyed the apartment by removing every toy from every nook and cranny in this apartment. After the fun of that wore off they started doing other things like playing peek-a-boo behind the curtains, hiding in their closet, and climbing on things.

While I was sitting at the dining table working I started hearing, "Hawp! Mommmmmma Hawp!" coming from their bedroom. I knew exactly what was going on……

Snow Day TnT

They had climbed up onto the changing table and couldn't get down. Those silly girls have been doing this for a couple of weeks now and they still haven't figured out how to get down.

I, of course, grabbed my phone to get a picture and when they say me then they started hamming it up. (Darn the grainy photos! I guess I need to have my real camera sitting out for moments like this.)

Snow Day Collage

I just love when they act like they love each other.

This one is my favorite (again, a grainy iPhone pic, ugh).

Snow Day TnT Fave

The relationship between sisters is like no other. There's just something so very special about it. I hope they remain the best of friends always and forever.

Today has been pretty calm. Hubs is working out at the house but only because he has to get some stuff done before they can come in and insulate and put up the drywall.

The girls and I are still stuck inside but we have been pretty lazy today….not much chaos. Thank goodness. I'm hoping the temps get above freezing sooner than Wednesday because I don't think I'll make it that long being holed up in this apartment.

Snowpocalypse Day 1

Snow Day!

We survived day one of the "historic winter storm".

The girls were fairly excited about the snow….for about 2 minutes. Then they carried on with their normal day doing what toddlers do. Right now, at 11pm, they are not asleep. I've been in there once and hubby is in there now.

TnT Snow Day

Hubby worked from home today. Yesterday when he told me he was going to work from home I wasn't sure how it was going to work. We have two toddlers. In an apartment. There's no where to go in this tiny space to get peace and quiet (he's on the phone most of the day for work). He worked in our bedroom. We made it work.

While the girls played and hubby worked, I worked on designing stuff for the shop. I added two more 8x10 printables today.

Merry-&-Bright  Joy to the World Chalkboard

If you follow me on Instagram, be on the lookout for another Flash Sale tommorow (Friday).

So we survived day one of being stuck inside. Our temps aren't supposed to get above freezing until next Wednesday so I'm fully expecting us to have full blown I'm-gonna-go-crazy-if-I-don't-get-out-of-this-apartment cabin fever by then. I'm really hoping the weather doesn't get that bad. And let's hope the girls sleep because if I don't get sleep I will definitely be a cranky momma.

Printables, Snowpocalypse and Flash Sales

I feel like this little blog hasn't been getting as much of my attention as it should. Being sick didn't help. I thought I'd just post some random stuff. It is Wednesday after all. ;)

I've been working on designs for my shop. I guess I just got a huge burst of creative energy because I can't stay away from my computer. Ideas just keep coming to me. If you happen to be looking for any Christmas printables (such as art and gift tags), head on over and check out my new stuff.

Speaking of shop stuff. I did a last minute Flash sale on Monday and since I didn't really give much notice, I think I'll try to do one on Friday. You'll want to check my IG feed because there will be some new stuff like this…..

Hint, hint: You can get it now, in my Etsy shop.

Much like the rest of the Midwest, we are preparing for Snowmageddon or Snowpocalypse…whatever you want to call it. I'm really hoping that all the forecasts are wrong and we don't get much of it but as it stands, we are pretty close to the area that is going to get some of the heaviest freezing rain/sleet/snow.

My mom and dad came by on Sunday and they brought the girls a popcorn tin. They were in popcorn heaven. Thankfully, they don't care too much for the caramel corn….it's my favorite and how I prefer to eat popcorn. :)

I bought some fleece lined leggings a couple of weeks ago and I am now obsessed, OBSESSED with them! They are comfortable and warm but not too warm. I have yet to get hot in them. You need to go look up SouthernandSimplyClassic on Instagram and get you some!

Stay Warm and Safe!

Rebuild Update: Week 15-In the Dry

New Mills Rebuild Logo

There was not much exciting progress this week. The HVAC passed inspection and the electrical did not. It wasn't a big deal though….the electrician fixed it on Friday. The plumber worked some last week too…we have bath tubs!…….but I would guess they still have a day or two more of work.

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw the ugly window incident. We were originally supposed to have fixed windows (cannot be opened) on the gables and then in the family room but they installed single hung windows (can be opened). The style was right, they were just the wrong type. I requested they correct it and then last week they delivered the oh so ugly windows I had posted on Instagram. I'm hoping we don't have to wait another 2 weeks on the correct windows because they can't really do anything else until all of the (correct) windows are installed.

Weather may get us again this week. They are forecasting rain/freezing rain/snow again this week. Ugh.
